Milan, 01.10.2025 – As part of an exhibition proposal that puts different artistic languages into dialogue within a unique and evocative architectural context, Spazio HUS is hosting, from 29 October to 12 November 2025, the personal exhibition of the Tuscan painter, draftsman and graphic designer Piero Scandura, curated by Andrea B. Del Guercio. The artist presents a selection of recent works in which the recurring motif of furniture becomes a distinctive element, establishing a direct dialogue with the exhibition space that hosts them and with its dimension linked to living.
In the preface to the monographic volume, Andrea B. Del Guercio offers a wide-ranging reading of the artist’s entire expressive iter, dwelling in particular on the recent arc of works “marked by the persistent presence of those furnishings that constituted the privileged axis of design in the gap between the 1930s and 1950s, from Josef Albers to Marco Zanuso, from Marcel Breuer to the technical support conducted within the great avant-garde companies. Predominant is the presence of armchairs, sofas and chairs, often in the foreground and in some cases distributed in the extension of a familiar habitat, among spatial surfaces that intersect and overturn between horizontality and verticality”.
“Although we cannot but speak of a figurative dimension for Piero Scadura,” observes curator Andrea B. Del Guercio -, in reality we are in the presence of an iconographic system that is specific to the modern and rationalist culture of design, understood from its very beginnings and along a development and diffusion that still characterises the living landscape of broad social strata. These data indicate an expressive elaboration in which the analytical processes of form are decisive and thus conceptually oriented beyond any ‘naturalistic’ projection of the image, favouring the symbolic objectivity of the functions represented – the processes of resting in reading, speaking and listening, thus dedicated to the centrality of ‘thinking’. Each painting, supported by the presence of a myriad of “drawings” and a series of “preparatory studies”, hosts a “photographic” catalogue dedicated to those well-known and widely distributed prototypes of chairs, armchairs and chaise-longues that become sofas, in some cases accompanied by low tables that “inhabit” lively living rooms. These are real presences, certainly tangible, with a rich series of cinematographic references able to ‘animate the scene’, to spectacularise vitality through the joyful light-heartedness of pastel colours, while the more ‘charged’ blues and reds distort, imposing themselves as actor-actors, to then leave room for the cold blue light of a clear dawn over the sea, then the warm shadows of an orange sunset, pervaded by violet anguish. Scandura ‘dwells’ with colour understood as light and as matter, integrating their presences through the constant search for balance and unbalance, overturning planes and interference of surfaces, so that the different ‘seats’ involved can never be stationary in space, but prefer the vital extension of designed forms. Once again, it is the “papers”, precious materials for a refined and competent collector, that are the first witnesses of Scandura’s research, tackled as the seat of the experimentation of languages, between the design of volumes – functions – and the confrontation with colour – life – so that the pictorial works can take substance in the larger and more extensive dimensions of the frames”.

Piero Scandura
Born in Pistoia, teacher of ‘Art and Image’, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. Painter, graphic designer and draughtsman, he collaborates with various organisations and companies.
He has exhibited and is exhibiting in prestigious art spaces in Italy and abroad. Art critic Paolo Levi included him in the publication ‘Museo Levi, Artisti da Museo’ while one of his graphics was selected by the Paper Museum in Pescia. Scandura’s painting was enriched by his participation in the 1990s in the activity of the ‘Atelier’ group in Carrara and his confrontation with art historian Prof. Giorgio Di Genova. With her 2012 solo exhibition in the halls of the Palazzo Ducale in Massa entitled ‘Non luoghi’ (curator Cinzia Compalati), her painting began to investigate the theme of ‘rooms’, where colour is not only a sensitive property of bodies but a complex, ambiguous and polyvalent phenomenon; even the object represented, whether it is the most domestic or the most sophisticated, possesses the same nature because, especially when depicted or imagined, it succumbs to the evocative power of the unconscious. In 2022, the Giorgio Mondadori publishing group chose to include it in the “Signa Artis ” series, dedicated to the protagonists of contemporary art, with a monograph edited by art historian Prof. Andrea B. Del Guercio.
