Research between art and science, a conversation between Rachele Maistrello and Riccardo Cuppini
Wednesday 28 May, 4 p.m. Galleria di Piazza San Marco, San Marco 71/c, VeniceAs part of the art project The Diamond Project. Chapter III – BLACK DIAMOND, visual artist Rachele Maistrello will dialogue with neurophysiologist Riccardo Cuppini in a public talk dedicated to the intersection between art, neuroscience and epigenetics, at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. The conversation will be moderated by Stefano Coletto. The conversation is part of the research path that Maistrello has been pursuing since 2020 with The Diamond Saga, a visionary investigation into the relationship between human beings and nature, a meta-narrative project in several chapters told through the rediscovered archives of Gao Yue and Fen Lin. Each chapter of the saga(Green Diamond, Blue Diamond, Black Diamond) focuses on a different contemporary theme – such as the human-nature interface, the desire for transcendence through totalising and synaesthetic experiences – articulating a retro-futurist imaginary in which fiction is constructed through analogue photographs, archive materials, videos and sound installations.BLACK DIAMOND (2024-2026), the third chapter of the ongoing saga, explores links and connections between genetic and cognitive heritage. Through the collaboration with Cuppini, the artist combines studies in epigenetics, neuroscience, biology, ethnopsychiatry and the relationship between identity and memory, with narrative construction and visual investigation, opening up new possibilities for interpreting human identity and exploring new territories where science and imagination meet.
During the talk, Maistrello and Cuppini will share the reflections that have emerged during their collaboration, immersing themselves in the creative processes of the contemporary art scene. They will also talk about the research results undertaken at Durham University’s Narrative and Cognition Lab, part of the larger project The Diamond Project. Chapter III and the forthcoming work by artist FEN LIN. Black Diamond, a project winner of the Tomorrows Unicredit Residency and Production Award, supported by ArtVerona, Urbspicta, and Unicredit, thanks to galleria Artopia.
Maistrello was one of the assignees of the Foundation’s ateliers in 2013; the BLM is therefore one of the places of development and training of her path. We are therefore particularly happy to host this meeting, which aims to bring an atmosphere of existential and spiritual exchange between the artist and the scientist, unravelling the complex maps of meaning that intervene in the construction of artistic research.
The research project The Diamond Project. Chapter III is supported by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture as part of the Italian Council programme (13th edition, 2024), aimed at the international promotion of Italian contemporary art.
The Foundation hosts this meeting as part of the European Month of Creativity CreArt 3.0, which involves 13 European cities in a wide-ranging exchange of experiences and good practices aimed at promoting contemporary art in all its forms: visual, performing and musical. A complex transnational mobility programme dedicated to emerging artists, curators and cultural operators, with the aim of enhancing the economic, social and cultural potential of creativity within local communities.
